Coorong Apiaries New Owners of Martins Well, Rangeland Reserve

Natalie and Bill Brown are delighted to announce that they are the new owners of the beautiful Martins Well, Rangeland Reserve, located in the Flinders Ranges Pastoral Region of South Australia. They will take possession of this magnificent property in April 2025.

About Martins Well

Martins Well is an expansive pastoral holding of 1,050 square kms (105,000 hectares/259,461 acres approximately). It comprises diverse and productive land systems interspersed with ranges and creek systems.

Tourist Facilities

Martins Well offers unique opportunities for tourists to experience a fantastic working ‘station stay’.

Sitting amongst 260,000 acres of historical and pastoral land, is a fully renovated 2 bedroom cottage – ‘Sunset Cottage’ that includes all the modern conveniences and outback touches to ensure a very relaxing and inspirational stay. Alternatively, visitors can choose from three brand new ensuite rooms in the renovated Shearer’s Quarters. With kitchen and dining facilities, these rooms make for a great family vacation! There are also five designated camping areas (some with toilets and hot water) that can be rented.

Guests can visit the Artipena Spring for a swim and watch the sun set, or walk to the incredible Reaphook Hill for memorable moments. Bird lovers can immerse themselves in watching birdlife in its natural habitat, while lovers of nature can bathe themselves in the energy of this ancient landscape.

Conservation Activities

Martins Well has a history of important conservation efforts aimed at rehabilitating the landscape back to its natural beauty. As passionate conservationists, Natalie and Bill are committed to continuing the conservation of ecosystems, biodiversity, indigenous history and pastoralism by safeguarding this amazing piece of land and educating future generations.

Unfortunately, 150+ years of European settlement has made a significant impact on the land, resulting in the near extinction of the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby, Spotted Quoll, Sandalwood and the Purple Spotted Gudgeon. Through the hard work of the former owners in partnership with government and neighbouring properties, these species are now repopulating successfully.

Geological Significance

Martins Well hosts a diverse assemblage of significant cultural, ecological and geological sites. Of particular importance is the geology of the Viliwaranha/Reaphook Hill area. This area hosts rocks containing fossils of the enigmatic Ediacara biota. At c. 555 million years old, these fossils represent the first macroscopic life on Earth, pre-dating the radiation of animals.

The Ediacara biota includes a range of weird and wonderful body plans and fossils including Dickinsonia, Rugoconites, Coronacolina and Tribrachidium have been unearthed here. Ediacaran fossils are found at locations across the Flinders Ranges and are the current focus of a World Heritage nomination application by the South Australian State Government. This aims to protect these fossil sites, while ensuring research and education will continue.

The Viliwaranha/Reaphook Hill area is an excellent place to study Ediacaran fossils, and is currently the research focus of geologists from the University of South Australia. Research undertaken to date has contributed to several research papers detailing aspects of how the Ediacara biota lived and interacted with one another, as well as understanding the shallow-water environments these organisms lived in. Fieldwork has yielded several significant fossil finds. These include a number of specimens which are currently being studied, as well as more fossil material which will remain on Martins Well for future study and education purposes.

Location

Martin Wells, Rangeland Reserve is located approximately 95km North East of Hawker, 50km due East of Ikara-Wilpena Pound and 365km (or 6 hours due to access via dirt roads) from the city of Adelaide.

Airstrip

The Reserve also features its very own private airfield, with two airstrips up to 1100m long, which is large enough to accommodate most small planes, and boasts a single hanger to keep your plane out of the elements. It is therefore a perfect base to explore the Flinders Ranges or Lake Eyre and beyond, without the hassle of sharing a strip! Fuel can be arranged by prior request, with advance notice.
